Here are five more Top terms that every veteran should know when filing for claims. Number 9: Claims & Pension Examination (C&P). When the VA determines that a veteran may be entitled to compensation but needs a medical opinion about the veteran's condition. The veteran is then scheduled for a C&P exam. A contracted medical professional examines the veteran for the claimed disability then supplies the VA with their medical opinion. Number 8: M-21 -1 Manual . This manual is one in a series that guides veterans through the claims process from start to finish. Very helpful in filing claims. Number 7: Claims & Pension examiner, This is a medical professional hired by the VA to provide a medical opinion on the veteran's claimed disability. The examination can consist of a physical or mental health exam. It can also be a records review only. Number 6: Bilateral and Unilateral Factors. These are factors that affect how a veteran is rated. Bilateral means both areas such as legs, knees, hips, and feet. A veteran can get high ratings in these areas. Unilateral is just that. The area is only rated for one disability such as one leg, knee, hip and foot. Number 5: Special Monthly Compensation. This is compensation that a veteran is paid beyond the regular monthly compensation. For example, a veteran needs Aid and Attendance with daily living such as feeding themselves, bathing and using the restroom. The veteran could be entitled to extra money.
