Serena Williams announced that she will evolve away from tennis after the upcoming US Open. Oh, what a dominant player, role model for minority girls/women, and champion we have witnessed in women's tennis in the last 30 years! Together with her older sister Venus, the Williams Sisters transformed the sport! They broke barriers and paved the way for other minority tennis players. Serena has won 73 career singles titles, 23 double titles, and two mixed double titles. Serena is also a four time Olympic Gold medalist and has won over $94.5 million in career prize money, more than any other female athlete.
Serena wants to focus on being a mom, her spiritual goals, and discovering a different, but just exciting Serena. She doesn't like to think of her legacy, but oh what a legacy she will leave! Because of the opportunities she experienced, she wants the following for women: 1) Women athletes to feel they can be themselves on the court; 2) Women can play with aggression and pump their fists; 3) Women can be strong, yet beautiful; and 4) Women can wear what they want, say what they want, and be proud of it all.
We definitely have witnessed all of the above when Serena steps onto the court! She is a dominant and aggressive player and is herself on the court. She is an athlete...strong, yet beautiful and she shows it on the tennis court. She is not afraid to break the norm and wear the tennis outfits she wants to wear and is proud of it! As a fan, I will miss Serena. As a wife and mom, I completely understand her decision. I wish her the best in all of her future endeavors. I will certainly be watching her in the upcoming US Open. 😊
